A weekend ago I was in Port Washington spending time with my oldest son, his wife and my grandchild, Sophia Daniela . I’m a grandfather for the first time, with two sons at home twelve and fifteen. Watching my two youngest boys, my wife, my oldest son, and his wife enthralled with this young darling of 6 weeks was amazing. It brought back emotional memories of when my three sons were all little and how important they were to me at that time. For my oldest and his wife Kim, Sophia was all they could talk about. If you’ve had children you know a baby completely changes your life, not only your schedule but how you prioritize. Can you remember how children changed your life? Chances are you can’t now. Become a grandfather, and you’ll suddenly be enlightened again. It was what this visit was about. To meet her. To get to know her. To give her our love.

Albert Einstein called compound interest the most powerful force in the universe. [Compounding is reinvesting the income on an investment and watching your principle grow. It grows exponentially over time. See Chart below.]

I read several books while on vacation including one recommended by one of our Gazelles coaches, Strategic Learning, by Willie Pietersen. I’m sure you’ve noticed how frantically the environment is changing. One of my clients today when reviewing his preparatory work for our Two Day Rockefeller Workshop noted one of his greatest fears is keeping pace with the rapid changes in technology that influence his business. He’s afraid some pimple faced kid in a garage may come up with a tool that will render his company obsolete.

Would it surprise you to discover that 91% of small to midsized business don’t have a formal structured sales process? One of our strategic partners is Objective Management Group. OMG is the originator of sales force evaluations and have evaluated over 8500 different sales forces, and 450,000 sales people. Most of the businesses they evaluate are larger companies since in order to evaluate sales teams; you need four or more sales people and managers. The 91% number comes for their evaluations of these 8500 companies. You can imagine what that number might be for sales teams smaller than 4 people.

Your long term goals for your business won't be achieved unless you break them down into individual accountabilities and priorities. As Peter Drucker pointed out, "Plans are only good intentions unless they immediately degenerate into hard work."
