Suppose you or one of your parents suffers from chronic hip pain caused by arthritis. Drugs to treat the pain no longer provide relief. The option becomes hip replacement surgery, invasive surgery that requires slicing open the thigh, wrenching the bone out of the socket, sawing off the arthritic end and replacing it with an implant. In addition recovery from this surgery is long and painful.

A singular focus [One Thing] can have a profound effect on your business. In April of last year one of my clients [name withheld to protect business secrets] had Positioning Systems come to his office in California to conduct our Two Day Rockefeller Habits Workshop. At the time their business was lagging 7% behind the previous year and struggling to get traction. Among the many ideas and actions that had an immediate impact was to go through the Strength Based Leadership Test and identify where his executive talents were. At the time the business was struggling to execute in the field and we identified several of the executive that had execution themes, reassigned them to positions were they could have the greatest affect and influence on the business. We reassigned others based on their top themes and the results were almost immediate and dramatic. By year end they turned their 7% decline into a 15% gain for the year.

A weekend ago I was in Port Washington spending time with my oldest son, his wife and my grandchild, Sophia Daniela . I’m a grandfather for the first time, with two sons at home twelve and fifteen. Watching my two youngest boys, my wife, my oldest son, and his wife enthralled with this young darling of 6 weeks was amazing. It brought back emotional memories of when my three sons were all little and how important they were to me at that time. For my oldest and his wife Kim, Sophia was all they could talk about. If you’ve had children you know a baby completely changes your life, not only your schedule but how you prioritize. Can you remember how children changed your life? Chances are you can’t now. Become a grandfather, and you’ll suddenly be enlightened again. It was what this visit was about. To meet her. To get to know her. To give her our love.

This week I spent about 16-20 intense hours working with a client’s executive team developing their strategic focus through Gazelles Two Day Rockefeller Habits Workshop. In Willie Pietersen’s book Strategic Learning he indicates that focus and compounding are the two most powerful forces in the universe. Developing clarity of focus is your springboard. Albert Einstein called compound interest the most powerful force in the universe. [Compounding is reinvesting the income on an investment and watching your principle grow. It grows exponentially over time. See Chart below.]
