Rehearse Your Future Before It Happens

Posted by Douglas A Wick on Mon, Jul 13, 2026

Elite performers don't wait for the moment. They prepare for it.

There is a reason elite athletes, military pilots, surgeons, and world-class performers spend so much time mentally rehearsing.

They understand something many leaders overlook.

Performance doesn't begin when the moment arrives.

It begins long before it.

Rehearse the Future Before It Happens 6-08-26The brain is constantly wiring itself around what it repeatedly experiences. Remarkably, it doesn't always distinguish between an event vividly imagined and one physically experienced. When we mentally rehearse a future experience with clarity, focus, and emotion, we begin preparing our nervous system to respond differently before the situation ever occurs.

Most leaders do the opposite.

They unknowingly rehearse yesterday's frustrations, failures, conflicts, and disappointments.

Then they're surprised when tomorrow looks remarkably similar.

Your Brain Is Always Rehearsing Something

Whether you realize it or not, you're practicing every day.

The only question is:

Your Brain Is Always Rehearsing Something 7-13-26Are you practicing the future you want—or repeating the past you've already lived?

Every recurring thought...

Every familiar emotional reaction...

Every story you tell yourself...

strengthens the neural pathways that make those responses more automatic.

The future isn't only created by what you do.

It's shaped by what your brain repeatedly rehearses.

My Greatest Rehearsal Happened in a Hospital

In 2012, I was being treated for Acute Myeloid Leukemia at the University of Iowa Hospitals.

The circumstances weren't encouraging.

My doctors were doing everything medically possible.

My responsibility was different.

Every day, I intentionally imagined the future I wanted to live.

My Greatest Rehearsal Happened in a Hospital (3 images) 7-13-26As I walked the hospital halls, I pictured myself healthy again.

I imagined speaking to leaders about what I had learned.

I imagined helping people create lasting change.

I imagined celebrating life with my family.

None of those things had happened.

There wasn't any evidence they would.

But looking back, I realize I wasn't simply wishing for a better future.

I was rehearsing becoming the person who would one day live it.

That daily practice changed far more than my outlook.

It changed how I showed up every day while facing one of the greatest challenges of my life.

Elite Performers Train Before Performance

Olympic athletes don't wait until race day to decide how they'll respond.

Professional golfers mentally hit thousands of shots before standing over the ball.

Pilots rehearse emergencies in simulators.

Musicians perform concerts in their minds long before walking onto the stage.

Elite Performers Train Before Performance 7-13-26Leadership deserves the same preparation.

Before the difficult conversation...

Before the board meeting...

Before giving critical feedback...

Before responding to conflict...

Pause.

Mentally walk through the situation.

See yourself remaining calm.

Think clearly.

Listen first.

Ask thoughtful questions.

Respond instead of reacting.

The more vividly you rehearse it, the more familiar that response becomes when pressure finally arrives.

Rehearsal Creates Familiarity

Rehearsal Creates Familiarity 7-13-26One reason change feels uncomfortable is that the new behavior is unfamiliar.

The old pattern feels safe—not because it's better, but because you've practiced it thousands of times.

Mental rehearsal begins changing that.

Every intentional rehearsal makes the future feel a little less foreign.

Eventually, your envisioned future starts feeling more familiar than your conditioned past.

That's when lasting change accelerates.

The Future Is Built Before It Happens

Many leaders wait until they feel confident before acting differently.

The Future Is Built Before It Happens - Rising Leader (Latina woman) 7-13-26Elite performers understand confidence grows from preparation.

They don't hope they'll perform well.

They prepare until performing well becomes natural.

Leadership works the same way.

You don't wait for pressure to discover who you'll become.

You decide first.

Then you rehearse it until your brain begins accepting it as familiar.

Because when pressure arrives, your brain rarely invents a new response.

It reaches for the one you've practiced most.

Reflection

Reflection 7-13-26Ask yourself:

What conversations...

What situations...

What challenges...

...are waiting for you this week?

Now imagine yourself moving through them exactly as the leader you want to become.

Because every rehearsal today is preparing tomorrow's performance.

Repetition - The Bridge Between Intention and Transformation (Next Blog) 7-13-26One choice won't change your life.

One rehearsal won't either.

Lasting transformation happens when new thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are repeated until they become familiar, then automatic.

In the next article, we'll explore why repetition—not willpower—is what ultimately rewires the brain and installs lasting change.

Most people don't struggle because of capability—they struggle because their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are neurologically conditioned to repeat the same results.

Through Change Your Mind. Create New Results, I help leaders interrupt stress-driven conditioning, regulate themselves under pressure, and create cultures driven by intention instead of survival.

Change the Pattern. Change the Result.

Ready to Create Different Results?

If you're exhausted from pressure, emotional reactivity, or repeating the same leadership patterns, perhaps it's time to stop managing symptoms and begin changing the conditioning that's creating them.

Real change begins when leaders learn how to regulate themselves under pressure—because regulated leaders create healthier cultures, clearer communication, stronger relationships, and better business results.

If you're ready to create a different future for yourself and your organization, let's start the conversation.
