In Elevate: Push Beyond Your Limits and Unlock Success in Yourself and Others, Robert Glazer believes your level of emotional capacity is deeply connected with how you manage the little voice in your head, interact with others, and the quality of your relationships.
Glazer suggests, “What we really fear is doing the work that is necessary. It’s easier and more convenient to make excuses. It’s more difficult—and far more rewarding—to believe you are fully in control of your own destiny.”
You’ve seen two people of equal intellectual and physical capacity achieving very different outcomes.
This is due to an imbalance in emotional capacity.
To build your emotional capacity, stop doubting yourself.
Your limits are self-imposed.
When you are clear about your purpose and values, you live by them.
We hold ourselves back by our self-limiting beliefs, and the expectations created for us by others. Without realizing it, this cycle occurs each day within us.
Too often, instead of acknowledging and pursuing our true potential, we manufacture reasons we can’t do something.
Discomfort and Challenge
“He or she who is willing to be the most uncomfortable is not only the bravest but rises the fastest.” —Brené Brown
None of us grows unless we’re pushed a little. Think about someone who has helped you grow. It may have been a parent, teacher, boss, colleague, friend, personal trainer, or sports or business coach. In my case, it’s been my high school basketball coach, my radio sales manager, a trusted business colleague, and recently a book coach.
These coaches told me what I needed to hear, not necessarily what I wanted to hear. That made all the difference.
Real change only happens when you are challenged.
As the saying goes, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you always get what you’ve always gotten.”
Few realize getting out of your comfort zone always begins with learning to be more vulnerable.
When you artificially suppress discomfort and vulnerability, you end up creating a false sense of reality for yourself and others.
Displaying and sharing your own vulnerabilities opens the doors for those around you to explore theirs, enabling everyone to grow together.
Real freedom comes from NOT bottling up your fears and insecurities.
“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” —Anonymous
It’s those who refuse to quit, and they don’t quit because they are clear about what’s most important to them.
“If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present.”
Gratitude
People who are grateful don’t feel that the world owes them anything. They believe it’s their responsibility to go out and get it.
Think about all the people in your life who assume the worst in everything and everyone.
Relationships
Personal knowledge is far less valuable if you don’t have a way to connect with others to apply it. You must be intentional about surrounding yourself with like-minded people who can help you grow and fulfill your potential.
Do the people in your life help you build your capacity? Or do they pull you down to their level of mediocrity?
Energy Vampires – Confession
Be intentional about surrounding yourself with like-minded people who help you grow and fulfill your potential.
Shortly after my ex-wife announced she was leaving to live in Florida with another man, my oldest son shared a startling revelation. In one of his Human Resource classes author Jack Canfield, Chicken Soup for the Soul, asked several questions about the people in Josh’s life:
Who are the energy vampires in your life?
Josh shocked me by sharing, “Dad the person I immediately thought of was mom!”
Both of my sons made difficult decisions to keep their mother at arm’s length for periods of their lives. Fortunately, today they’re both in a better place with her.
Discomfort, vulnerability, resilience, a positive attitude, gratitude, and quality relationships are key to achievement in yourself and others!
