Are Your People The Priority They Should be?

Posted by Douglas A Wick on Tue, Sep 4, 2012

If you’re not a fan of college football, and you’re a business owner there’s one thing you should pay close attention to for growing your business.  It’s Jim Collins principal for Good To Great, First Who, Then What.  Lou Saban Alabama resized 600If you look at the college football rankings this week you’ll see a list of teams (Alabama, USC, LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma, Florida State, Georgia and Arkansas) that are perennially on the top ranked college football teams.  Why?

It revolves around one of my favorite quotes because it reinforces the principal of People from Mastering the Rockefeller Habits, and our Four Decisions practice.  These football teams annually field the best teams because they recruit the best athletes’.  Does your business recruit the best team members?  How excellent are your recruiting practices?

“No matter how you total success in the coaching profession, it all comes down to a single factor – talent.  There may be a hundred great coaches of whom you have never heard in basketball, football or any sport who will probably never receive the acclaim they deserve simply because they have not been blessed with the talent.  Although not every coach can win consistently with talent, no coach can with without it.”

- John Wooden, legendary coach of UCLA Bruins basketball teams

Struggling to build your business involves a lot of critical elements, yet none are more important than getting the right people on the bus.  Do you believe getting the right people to work for you is important or not?  IF you do, why haven’t you put a recruiting and hiring practice that ensures you get better people than your competition?

IF you don’t know how to create a recruiting and hiring process immediately investigate Topgrading.  The progress they’ve made on helping you hire the best people is simply remarkable.   Job Summary Scorecards, Snapshot pages, all help you to build a better team.

In our Gazelles (Rockefeller Habits Quarterly Meetings) we review your team of players to make sure there’s progress and to continually work at building your team to the “A” level of performance that Topgrading inspires.  It’s the difference between having a competitive winning team and an also ran.

Take a lesson from the best college football teams every season.  Develop a recruiting and hiring plan that will ensure your team of professionals preforms at the highest level possible and beats your competition!
